What are your research interests as they relate to northern Australia?

My interests lie in finding out what makes people’s lives better. What makes people happy? It’s a combination of social, economic and environmental factors. Northern Australia has a wide range of all of those factors and I like trying to work out the trade-offs – how people fit them all together to make their lives better.

What do you love about working in northern Australia?

I love the climate, the beautiful dramatic scenery and the extremes of reef and wild countryside. My favourite place where I’ve done research is Port Douglas, Queensland – I had to walk along the beach surveying tourists. Meeting people while walking on the beach in such a beautiful area hardly seemed like work!
