NERP Northern Australia Hub

Improving biodiversity conservation in northern Australia

The Northern Australia Hub was a research group funded by the Australian Government’s National Environmental Research Program (NERP).  Over four years from 2012 to 2015 the hub worked to improve biodiversity conservation in the terrestrial, freshwater and estuarine ecosystems in northern Australia’s tropical savanna region.  The Hub drew together over 80 experts from a range of disciplines and many on ground partners.

The Hub’s research program was focused around four big questions:

  1. How can we prevent biodiversity loss in systems that are currently in good condition?
  2. How can we halt or reverse biodiversity loss that is already occurring, by better understanding the causes and the options of addressing these?
  3. How can we plan at the catchment scale to conserve biodiversity and accommodate multiple and often competing objectives?
  4. How can we improve partnerships and livelihood options among key land owners to support biodiversity management and monitoring?
